AMERICUS, Ga. – The 10th-ranked Columbus State University baseball team finished off a weekend sweep with two more wins at Georgia Southwestern on Sunday. The Peach Belt Conference series was played in Americus.

Columbus State (29-6, 13-4 PBC) picked up 7-5 and 7-3 victories to stay in second place in the conference standings.

"It's really good to come down here and get three wins," head coach Greg Appleton said. "Regardless of their record, this has always been a tricky place for us and we were able to take care of business."

The Cougars are back on their home field on Wednesday for a return game against Montevallo. CSU defeated the Falcons 16-8 in late February. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.

Game One

As they did all weekend, the Cougars jumped on the board early in Sunday's opener.

Austin Pharr doubled home a pair to start the scoring in the top of the second, while Frank Wager and Grant Berry had run-scoring hits in the third.

Georgia Southwestern (6-28, 2-19) plated its first run in the third, but the Cougars got it back with a sacrifice fly in the fifth from Wager.

The Canes pulled the game back within one at 5-4 in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, Berry kept the Cougars in front with an outstanding defensive play in shallow right field.

CSU answered right back in the eighth as Pharr pushed the lead out to two on a sac fly and another run scored courtesy of Drew Webb.

GSW got another run in the eighth, but the Cougars got another really strong defensive effort to thwart the rally. Webb went deep into the right-centerfield gap to take away extra bases and preserve the lead.

Justin Evans then slammed the door shut in the ninth to take game one and earn his third save. Perez Knowles (4-1) allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings to tally the win.

Berry and Garrett Kirkwood had three hits each on the day for the Cougars.

Game Two

The Cougars struck first in the second game as well, getting a RBI single from Chase Brown in the second inning.

Robert Brooks made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly in the third and Berry continued his stellar day with a two-run single.

Georgia Southwestern pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the third to get back within a run, but the Cougars would keep them off the board the rest of the way.

Robert Brooks singled home Mason McClellan to stretch the lead in the fifth inning and Pharr added his second sac fly of the day to make it 6-3.

Webb then delivered the final blow, hitting his third home run of the year in the sixth inning.

T.J. Clark (5-3) gave up just three runs in six innings for his fifth win of the year. Miles Dutton pitched a pair of scoreless innings and Drew Reeves tossed a scoreless ninth.

Berry had another three-hit game in the nightcap as the Cougars tallied double-digit hits for the sixth straight game.
