Game One
Â
As they did all weekend, the Cougars jumped on the board early in Sunday's opener.
Â
Austin Pharr doubled home a pair to start the scoring in the top of the second, while
Frank Wager and
Grant Berry had run-scoring hits in the third.
Â
Georgia Southwestern (6-28, 2-19) plated its first run in the third, but the Cougars got it back with a sacrifice fly in the fifth from Wager.
Â
The Canes pulled the game back within one at 5-4 in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, Berry kept the Cougars in front with an outstanding defensive play in shallow right field.
Â
CSU answered right back in the eighth as Pharr pushed the lead out to two on a sac fly and another run scored courtesy of
Drew Webb.
Â
GSW got another run in the eighth, but the Cougars got another really strong defensive effort to thwart the rally. Webb went deep into the right-centerfield gap to take away extra bases and preserve the lead.
Â
Justin Evans then slammed the door shut in the ninth to take game one and earn his third save.
Perez Knowles (4-1) allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings to tally the win.
Â
Berry and
Garrett Kirkwood had three hits each on the day for the Cougars.
Â
Game Two
Â
The Cougars struck first in the second game as well, getting a RBI single from
Chase Brown in the second inning.
Â
Robert Brooks made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly in the third and Berry continued his stellar day with a two-run single.
Â
Georgia Southwestern pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the third to get back within a run, but the Cougars would keep them off the board the rest of the way.
Â
Robert Brooks singled home
Mason McClellan to stretch the lead in the fifth inning and Pharr added his second sac fly of the day to make it 6-3.
Â
Webb then delivered the final blow, hitting his third home run of the year in the sixth inning.
Â
T.J. Clark (5-3) gave up just three runs in six innings for his fifth win of the year.
Miles Dutton pitched a pair of scoreless innings and
Drew Reeves tossed a scoreless ninth.
Â
Berry had another three-hit game in the nightcap as the Cougars tallied double-digit hits for the sixth straight game.
