TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team took down No. 18 UNC Pembroke 8-2 on Thursday night to begin NCAA Tournament action. The Southeast Regional opener was played at North Greenville University.
Â
Columbus State (41-12) moves into the second round where it will take on second-ranked North Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.
Â
"This was a good game between two very good teams," head coach
Greg Appleton said. "Kolton (Ingram) threw the ball well and Austin (Pharr) got the big home run that was basically the difference in the game."
Â
As he did in the opening game of last week's Peach Belt Conference Tournament,
Chase Brown started the day with a bang. The junior launched his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning to give the Cougars the early advantage.
Â
The two teams were thrown a curveball in the third inning, as lightning in the area forced a stoppage in play. The delay lasted 46 minutes before
Kolton Ingram stepped back on the mound.
Â
Ingram worked four scoreless frames before UNC Pembroke (38-14) broke through with two runs in the fifth to move in front by a run.
Â
The Cougars battled back through, finally getting back on the scoreboard in the sixth.
Drew Webb started with a walk and proceeded to steal second. The sophomore then moved to third on a balk and scored the tying run with a second balk in the inning.
Â
Later in the frame,
Austin Pharr smoked a ball just inside the foul pole in right field to break the tie and give the Cougars the lead back.
Â
With Columbus State still leading 5-2 in the eighth, UNC Pembroke threatened with the bases loaded and only one out.
Jalen Latta coaxed a groundball to third and
Mason McClellan started a double play around the horn to finish off the frame with the lead still intact.
Â
The Cougars tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, getting a bases loaded walk from
Frank Wager and a two-run single from
Garrett Kirkwood to provide more cushion.
Â
Payton Phillips entered in the ninth and retired the Braves in order with a pair of strikeouts to send the Cougars into the next round.
Â
Ingram (12-3) worked seven innings in the win, giving up just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Â
Pharr's 2-for-3 night at the plate led the way for the Cougars, who had just six hits in the game.
