COLUMBUS – The third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team put up three more goals and stayed perfect in Peach Belt Conference play with a 3-1 win over Clayton State on Saturday. The match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Columbus State (7-0-1, 4-0-0 PBC) has now scored at least three goals in seven of eight matches this season.
"Clayton State was really good defensively tonight," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "It took us a little while to find the pockets of space to play in, but to get three goals against that defense was a good result."
For the second straight match, CSU went to the halftime break in a scoreless match. As they did on Wednesday, the Lady Cougars held the opponent without a shot over the first 45 minutes, but were unable to find a goal.
The breakthrough finally came in the 61
st minute, as
Kimmy May pounced on a loose ball in the box and pounded home the match's first goal.
Clayton State (3-3-2, 1-3-0) answered right back though. A takedown in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Lakers that was converted to level the match at one.
The score held at one apiece until the 77
th minute, when
Olivia Jarrell headed a cross from
Parker Morgan off the inside of the left post and into the net. The goal was the team-leading sixth of the year for the senior.
Maria Kilset added the insurance 10 minutes later, taking a pass from
Rachael Sweigard and lofting a shot over the keeper from outside the box for her first collegiate goal.
Columbus State is at home again on Thursday for its rescheduled match with UNC Pembroke. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
