COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University softball team notched its first victory of the season Friday in the closing game of the first night of the Cougar Classic. The three-day event is being held at Cougar Field in Columbus.

The Lady Cougars got a pair of solo homers in the game while senior Darby Demarest recorded her first win of the year.

"I thought we played well tonight," said head coach Brad Huskisson. "Sometimes it's hard to keep the players focused during a rain delay, but I thought the girls responded the way we should and I liked how we played ahead today. It's always nice to get some early runs on the board."

In the bottom of the second, CSU sent seven hitters to the plate as it took a 2-0 lead.  Elyse Ambrose led the frame off with a single right back up the middle before stealing second. Albany State pitcher Aryn McGowan would then have trouble with her control throwing two wild pitches to allow Ambrose to cross the plate. Later in the inning, Anna Richardson, who pitch ran for Harley Dawson, also scored thanks to a wild pitch.

An inning later, it was 3-0 as Elizabeth Perdue belted her second home run of the season.

Demarest only ran into trouble in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first, the senior lost control hitting a batter before issuing back-to-back walks to force a run in. However, Demarest (1-1) allowed just the one run on two hits through six innings. After setting a CSU record with 19 strikeouts in her first start of the year, Demarest punched out seven Friday.

Columbus State (1-3) capped off the scoring in the fifth with Morgan Elston's first collegiate home run and an RBI triple from Mary Horne.

Ambrose finished the night 3-for-4 with a run scored while five other Lady Cougars recorded a base hit.

The Cougar Classic will continue Saturday with five games beginning at 10 a.m. Columbus State will take on Embry-Riddle at 5:30 p.m. before closing the night with a tilt against Union at 8:00 p.m.
