ORLANDO, Fla. - Facing off against the top team in the nation, the third-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team lost 7-0 to Barry Saturday. The match took place at the USTA Training Center in Orlando, Fla.
Barry earned the doubles point taking both matches that were played. The top-ranked duo of Zuza Maciejewska and Verena Schmid swept 10th-ranked Noa Davico and Luise Sachs. At second doubles, Jill Engelmann and Eleonore Barrere defeated Candice Paya and Natalia Kattah Paz 6-1.
The Buccaneers won all five singles matches that were play to complete the sweep. Playing at the top spot, Maciejewska defeated 46th-ranked Paya 6-4, 6-2. Second and third singles ended by almost identical scores with 17th-ranked Schmid winning 6-4, 6-3 over 10th-ranked Sachs at second singles while 12th-ranked Carolin Schmidt won 6-3, 6-4 against 18th-ranked Davico at third singles. Engelmann took fourth singles against Paz 6-4, 6-0 with 21st-ranked Julie Razafindranaly capping off the sweep at fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Clara Audap.
Columbus State will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 hosting Georgia Southwestern. The matches will begin at 2 p.m. at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.Â
