COLUMBUS – Jalen Latta tossed seven scoreless innings as the Columbus State University baseball team blanked Rollins 8-0 Saturday afternoon. The middle game of the three-game series took place at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.

Latta (2-1) allowed just three hits in the performance while striking out a career-high nine.  Sheridan Coy capped off the shutout for the Cougars tossing two scoreless frames. The reliever hasn't allowed a run in his last five outings.

"Got to give all the credit to our pitchers once again," said head coach Greg Appleton. "Jalen was aggressive today and kept their hitters guessing which is all that you can ask for from your starter. We're going to face one of their best pitchers tomorrow but I think our guys are hungry to grab another win."

It was shaping up to be a pitchers duel until Columbus State (7-4) broke through against Rollins starter Jimmy Robbins in the third. Leading off the inning, Drew Webb hit a towering homer to centerfield to open the scoring. Following a Garrett Kirkwood walk, Robert Brooks continued to wear out the gaps doubling to left-center to put two runners into scoring position. CSU would get the runners over from there as a Frank Wager RBI groundout and a wild pitch made it a 3-0 game.

The run support would be plenty for Latta. The junior retired 11 of the final 12 hitters he faced allowing just a one-out single in the sixth.

The Cougars broke the game open in the sixth with another crooked number, throwing up a four-spot. Back-to-back walks began the inning before Grant Berry laced a double past the third base bag to make it 4-0.  After a Matthew McDade sacrifice fly, Webb recorded another extra-base hit hustling into second for an RBI double. G. Kirkwood capped off the scoring with a single to right giving the Cougars the 7-0 lead.

CSU added a run an inning later on a Chase Brown sacrifice fly.

Brooks (2-for-3), Berry (2-for-4) and Webb (2-for-4) all recorded multi-hit performances for the Cougars. Each had a double while Webb added the solo homer.

The Cougars will try for their sixth win in a row tomorrow as they look to sweep Rollins. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Burger King Stadium.
