WINGATE, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team dropped their third match of the season as No. 19 Wingate came away with the 4-3 win Saturday. The match took place at the Wingate Tennis Complex.
Second-ranked
Beatriz Lopez and
Marleen Tilgner lost at the top doubles spot for the Lady Cougars with Michela Verpelli and Alisa Rudenko grabbing the 6-0 win. 10th-ranked
Luise Sachs and
Noa Davico followed it up at second doubles with a 4-6 loss to give Wingate the lone doubles point. The match at third doubles with
Candice Paya and
Natalia Kattah Paz ended unfinished at 4-4 when Wingate clinched the point.
Columbus State grabbed two singles wins in the third and fourth positions as 46
th-ranked Paya and 10
th-ranked Sachs came away with wins to give CSU two points. Paya won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 while Sachs split her first two sets 4-6, 6-2 before taking the final set 6-3.
But Wingate responded at the top two positions taking down Tilgner and Lopez. 25
th-ranked Tilgner fell short in the third set 2-6 after splitting the first two sets by a score of 7-5, 2-6. Lopez lost in straight sets to her opponent 4-6, 2-6.
With the Lady Cougars trailing 3-4, they needed to grab wins in the fifth and sixth spots to pull out the win. Unfortunately 18
th-ranked Davico lost in straight sets 3-6, 2-6 giving Wingate the clinching point. Paz was in the third set 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 as the final point was clinched.
Columbus State will head to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Auburn-Montgomery on Wednesday, March 6. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
