COLUMBUS - In a battle of the top two teams in the Peach Belt Conference, the Columbus State University baseball team lost an 11-0 decision in the second game of the series against USC Aiken. The Peach Belt Conference game was played at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field.Â
Columbus State (18-8, 7-4 PBC) suffered just their first home lost since the opening series of the season.Â
"We ran up against some really good pitching today and we knew their bats would bounce back," said head coach
Greg Appleton. "We missed the early opportunity with the bases loaded in the second and just weren't able to get anything going after that."
The lone big chance for CSU came in the bottom of the second inning with the Pacers on top 1-0. Columbus State drew two walks and was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. But a strikeout would end the threat and get USC Aiken back up at the plate.Â
It was there that they would explode at the plate, scoring five runs in the third and adding another four in the fourth. With one out the Pacers loaded the bases and then picked up a single to make it a 2-0 lead. Similar to last night with the Brooks grand slam, it was one swing of the bat that busted the game open. The Pacers ripped a double into left center that cleared the bases to put them ahead 6-0.
The same hitter would then deliver again the following inning for USC Aiken hitting a three run home run to bring it to the 11-0 final score line.Â
The Cougars got good efforts from their bullpen which finished the final 5.1 innings of the game without giving up a run.
Nick Adams saw the first action of his collegiate career throwing 3.1 innings giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.Â
Clayton Duncan and
Jarrod Little would each come in for an inning to finish things off for CSU without giving up a hit.
The Cougar pitchers put zeroes up on the board for the final five innings of the game.Â
The only two Cougar hits of the game were picked up by
Kendall Ford and
Robert Brooks who each went 1-for-4 at the plate.Â
Columbus State and USC Aiken will play the final game of the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
