COLUMBUS - The 6th-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team lost for the first time in 13 matches falling to top-ranked Division III Emory University 4-3 on Monday. The match took place at the Walden Tennis Center.
Columbus State (19-4, 9-0 PBC) wrapped up their regular season play with only four losses, including two of them to top three ranked Division II teams.
The Lady Cougars had their chances at doubles with Marleen Tilgner and Luise Sachs picking up the 6-4 win at the top spot. After 40th-ranked Candice Paya and Natalia Kattah Paz fell just short 4-6 at third, the doubles point came down to the second court.
Beatriz Lopez and Noa Davico went to a final set with the CSU duo actually having a chance to lock down the point on four separate occasions. But Emory University battled back each time before coming away 7-6 to secure the first point.
Straight sets determined five of the six singles as the two teams went back and forth at each other. Third and fourth singles for the Lady Cougars notched points with Paya winning 6-0, 6-3 and 63rd-ranked Sachs coming out on top 6-3, 6-3. That would be the same scoreline that Paz would win giving CSU another point at sixth singles.
Emory picked up points though at second and fifth singles as 33rd-ranked Lopez dropped her court 3-6, 1-6 with Davico losing 1-6, 3-6.
With the match tied at three points apiece, it all came down to the top singles spot with Tilgner taking on Ysabel Gonzalez Rico. Tilgner grabbed the first set 6-1 before Rico fought back with a 6-3 win to even it up. In the final set, Tilgner couldn't quite pull out the win in the tightly contested match as she lost 4-6.
Columbus State wrapped up their regular season play and will now prepare for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament. The action will begin Friday, April 19 in Florence, S.C.
