CARROLLTON, Ga - The Columbus State University baseball team broke out the bats in their 11-6 win over West Georgia on Wednesday. The non-conference game took place at Cole Field.Â
Columbus State (25-14, 10-10 PBC) hung a crooked number in three separate innings to propel them to the big midweek win over the Wolves.Â
"I thought our offense did a good job of putting pressure on their pitching early on," said head coach Greg Appleton. "When your number one and nine hitters each rack up four hits you know you're going to have chances to pile on some runs.
Those runs started for the bat cats in the second inning when they batted around the lineup. Kendall Ford led things off with a four pitch walk before stealing second and third base to put him 90 feet away from scoring. Bryce Delevie would help him do just that, hitting a sac-fly into right field to open the scoring.Â
The Cougars would reel off four straight hits in the inning starting with a Matthew McDade single that brought a second run in. Garrett Kirkwood would single to put runners on the corners which set the stage for the top of the lineup.Â
Grant Berry ripped a double to right center and a Drew Webb single put CSU in front 4-0. An RBI-groundout from Robert Brooks would cap off the five-run Cougar inning.
Starting pitcher Tyler Cadenhead had a strong start going three-up, three-down in two of the first three innings. Cadenhead (4-3) would finish his outing after five innings, giving up three runs with three strikeouts.Â
Columbus State would get another huge inning in the fourth as all nine batters got a chance to step into the box. Kirkwood and Berry would open the inning with back-to-back singles, and an error on a sac-bunt by Webb would open the doors for both of them to come around to score.Â
Three more hits ensued in the inning including an RBI-double down the left field line by Dane Bullock to catapult the Cougars in front 9-0.Â
But from there West Georgia would make a late push. Six unanswered runs brought it to a 9-6 scoreline as they entered the ninth and final inning.Â
That's when CSU added two insurance runs off another double down the left field line, this time by Berry to shut the door.
It was the ninth time this season that the Cougars have scored in double figures and their 15 hits were the second most they've collected in a game all season.
Kirkwood notched four hits for the third time this year, going 4-for-5 with two runs and double. Berry also snagged four hits, scoring twice and driving in three with two doubles.Â
Columbus State will return home to take on Young Harris in a three-game series starting Thursday, April 18. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
