FLORENCE, S.C. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team secured a berth in the Peach Belt Conference championship match after sweeping 7th-ranked Lander 4-0. The semifinal match took place at Francis Marion.
Columbus State (22-2) will have a shot at winning their third consecutive Peach Belt Conference championship on Sunday.Â
The top doubles spot saw another showdown for top-ranked Zach Whaanga and Alvaro Regalado as they took on 3rd-ranked Adam Elliget and Axel Cronje. After defeating them 6-4 just over one week ago, the Cougar duo nabbed another triumph over them, this time taking care of business 6-2.Â
KP Pannu and Tommaso Schold took second doubles 6-2 giving the Cougars the doubles point. That left the final court with Matei Avram and Arnold Kokulewski unfinished at 4-4.Â
The three points that the Cougars earned in singles play all came via straight set wins.Â
Pannu took down 54th-ranked Cronje for the second time in eight days, beating him 6-1, 6-2 at the top singles spot. At third singles, 30th-ranked Regalado grabbed another CSU point winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
66th-ranked Avram notched a point at fifth singles with his straight set takedown at 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.Â
The remaining three courts that went unfinished were all taken by Columbus State in the opening set.Â
At second singles, 31st-ranked Whaanga was up 6-2, 6-6 before the match was called while 75th-ranked Fabien Asdrubal was up 7-6 (7-4), 4-2 at third singles. Over at sixth singles it was Schold who was tied at one set apiece at 6-2, 7-5.Â
The championship match will feature the Cougars taking on 6th-ranked USC Aiken and is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 21.
