MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - After giving up leads in the previous two games, the Columbus State University baseball team made sure to keep the runs coming en route to their 11-3 win over Georgia College on Sunday. The final game of the Peach Belt Conference series took place at John Kurtz Field.
The Cougar bats didn't let up all game as they piled on 11 runs off of their 18 hits.Â
"I'm proud of our team for not coming out flat after two tough defeats," said head coach Greg Appleton. "We stayed the course and got a big win to carry us into our final series of the regular season."
The win was a historic one for Greg Appleton as the head coach won his 800th game at the helm of the Columbus State University Cougars.Â
As has been the case all series, the Cougars opened up the scoring early and often.Â
Chase Brown got CSU across home plate in the first inning with a sacrifice-fly to right center, scoring Grant Berry. That would set the stage for the Cougars huge second inning explosion.Â
Columbus State started the inning off by hitting four consecutive singles to plate one while loading the bases with no outs. The bases-loaded scenario for CSU would become a consistent theme throughout the game.Â
From there it was Drew Webb and Robert Brooks hitting two more singles to put CSU on top 5-0. It would give the Cougars six consecutive singles to open the second inning. Columbus State would add two more on a fielder's choice and an error to give them the six-spot frame.Â
The hits wouldn't stop there as another three singles in the following two innings would score two more runs to open up a 9-0 lead. For good measure, another run would come across the plate in the seventh and eighth innings to put CSU comfortably ahead.Â
The pitching was fantastic on the afternoon in protecting the lead for CSU with Kolton Ingram getting the start. Ingram went six innings giving up only two runs while striking out four.Â
After exiting through six, Devin Dudal came in relief and shut the Bobcats down for the final three innings. The sophomore allowed only one hit with three strikeouts to seal the win.Â
Two Cougars finished with four hits, all of which were singles as both Berry and Bryce Delevie finished 4-for-6.Â
Webb, Brown and Brooks each collected two hits with Brown and Brooks picking up two RBI's apiece.Â
The Cougars will close the regular season with a three-game series against North Georgia beginning on Friday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
