COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team couldn't break through against the West Alabama defense dropping a 2-0 decision on Sunday. The match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex and was a part of the CSU Collegiate Invitational.
UWA (2-2) scored a late first half goal and then took advantage of a turnover deep in CSU territory in the 77
th minute to add the final tally.
"West Alabama was the better team today," said head coach
Jay Entlich. "They wanted this victory more than us, and they executed their gameplan to perfection. Hats off to their girls and coaching staff."
"The lesson from today is we have to learn how to win Sunday matches because that's what it takes in the postseason."
Columbus State (3-1) only fired off four shots in the first half. In the 43
rd minute, a loose ball off a free kick led to West Alabama's first goal of the afternoon.
Coming out of the break, Columbus State played with more urgency as
Riley Clark and
Flo Spano each put a shot on goal over the first five minutes. Spano nearly found the equalizer in the 67
th minute making the Tiger goalkeeper push one over the crossbar.
In the 77
th minute, a turnover started an UWA attack.
Bria Riancho was able to make a save on the first shot attempt but came up just short on the second as the Tigers went ahead by two.
Each side had 12 shots while West Alabama held a 7-5 shot on goal advantage.
Riancho made five saves in goal for the Lady Cougars.
Columbus State will open up Peach Belt Conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 hosting North Georgia. The match will begin at 6 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.

• The loss snaps Columbus State's 18-match home winning streak. CSU's last home loss was on Sept. 20, 2017 to North Georgia.
• It was also the first regular season loss for Columbus State in its last 18 matches.
• West Alabama was the first nonconference opponent to win a match at the Walden Soccer Complex since 2013. CSU was on a 16-match win streak against nonconference foes at home.
• It was the first time the Lady Cougars went scoreless in a home match since 2012. The streak stretched over 62 matches.
