No. 13 Lady Cougars Drop 1-0 Decision to No. 4 Grand Valley

CSU will look to rebound on Wednesday against Catawba.

COLUMBUS - In a rematch of the 2015 NCAA Division II women's soccer National Championship, 13th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team came up just short dropping a 1-0 decision to fourth-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday. The top-25 matchup was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The lone goal of the contest was scored early on in the 11th minute of action. Following a corner kick, the ball was flicked to Ava Cook into a dangerous part of the box where she found the back of the net.

Columbus State (3-3) had some good looks at the goal later in the half. Senior Flo Spano nearly found the equalizer as her shot went just high of the crossbar in the 17th minute.

CSU brought the intensity to begin the second half controlling the pace of play. In the 61st minute, junior Maddy Peterson nearly had a goal, but her shot went just wide to the right.

Down the stretch, Peterson went on the attack again as she fired off two shots in the 87th minute. However, her first attempted was blocked while the other was grabbed by the keeper allowing Grand Valley (4-1) to come away with the victory.

"This was a tremendous match," commented head coach Jay Entlich. "Grand Valley State is always one of the best teams in the nation, and they deserve credit in finding a way to win today."

"We want to challenge our players that's why we play this grueling schedule. Sure, we could go up against an average opponent, but if you play against the best, you can find things that you need to work on."

Both teams were very physical on the defensive end combining for 17 fouls.

The Lakers outshot the Lady Cougars 12-11 over the match and also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Columbus State will return back to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 25 for a home match against Catawba. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a special ceremony for our men and women in uniform a part of CSU's Military Appreciation Day.
