COLUMBUS - In its final tune-up match before the inaugural Division II ITA National Indoor Championships, the second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team bested No. 16 West Alabama 6-1 Sunday afternoon. The nonconference match took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center at Cooper Creek Park in Columbus.
The Tigers (4-3) made the Cougars earned the doubles point with the decisive match coming at second doubles. After
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos won at the first spot 6-4, UWA took third doubles with Noah Johansen and Nuutti Jokinen defeating
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti 6-4.Â
With the point in
Matei Avram's and
Christian Garay's hands, the Cougar duo came through. The pair edged Ilia Dehodiuk and Patricio Nieto Corra 7-6 to put CSU ahead.
Columbus State (3-0) didn't have any problem in five of the six singles matches. Second-ranked Regalado won his 26
th straight match at the top spot downing Vesanen 6-3, 7-6. Garay and Schold each dropped just four total games in their matches at third and fifth singles, respectively. Garay won his match 6-4, 6-0 while Schold was a 6-2, 6-2 winner.
Cueto Ramos (6-3, 6-2, fourth) and
Justin Welz (6-2, 6-0, sixth) won the final two matches for the Cougars.
West Alabama's lone point of the day came after Bulus took down
Fabien Asdrubal 6-3, 6-4 at second singles.
In the opening match of the ITA National Indoor Championship, Columbus State will play fifth-ranked Saint Leo on Friday, Feb. 28. The three-day tournament is being held in Oklahoma City at the OKC Tennis Center.
