MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Staying busy over the weekend, the third-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team recorded its second win in as many days breezing by Division I Alabama State 6-1 on Sunday.
Columbus State (2-1) took two of the three doubles matches to grab the early lead. Playing at second doubles, Candice Paya and Beatriz Lopez recorded a 6-3 win while Amanda Citre and Luise Sachs raced to a 6-1 victory in the third position. Neila Trklja and Kristina Baran nearly won a thriller at first doubles, but fell 7-5.
Alabama State couldn't keep up with the Lady Cougars in singles play. No. 10 Sachs and No. 21 Paya were very impressive at first and second singles, respectively. Sachs was quick in downing her opponent 6-0, 6-3 while Paya recorded a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep. No. 17 Lopez and Agostina Bigotti were also straight-set winners on Sunday. The senior, Lopez, won her match 6-3, 6-0 at third singles with the freshman earning a 6-4, 6-3 decision in the sixth spot.
Citre played a grueling match at fifth singles for Columbus State against the Division I foe. After dropping the first set 6-1, the freshman grinded out a 7-6 victory to force a decisive set. In the back-and-forth third set, Citre was able to pull out a 10-8 margin to earn the victory.
Alabama State took fourth singles with Trklja falling in a three-set decision (6-3, 2-6, 6-0).
Columbus State will have nearly a week off before returning back to the John W. Walden Tennis Center to host Anderson on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
