COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team collected another sweep on Saturday defeating Montevallo 7-0 in a nonconference match. All the action took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.
The Cougars (9-0) were impressive, particularly in singles play. Without its number one or two players in the lineup, CSU won all six matches in straight sets.
In doubles play, the first point of the day came down to third doubles where
Pietro Martinetti and
Tommaso Schold were battling James Bloomer and Brecht Van Buggenhout. The Cougar pair eventually took the decision 6-4.
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos were also winners taking first doubles 6-2. Montevallo (3-4) in the second position after Georg Trompler and Tanguy David defeated
Matei Avram and
Christian Garay 6-2.Â
Garay had the biggest win of the afternoon after taking down No. 40 Trompler. Playing at the top spot in singles for the first time this season, the Columbus native took both sets 6-2 over Trompler for his second win over a ranked opponent.Â
Tanguy was competitive against Cueto Ramos, but the Cougar was too much as the freshman took the match 6-2, 7-6 in the second position. Columbus State easily took third, fourth, and fifth singles. Schold (6-1, 6-0, third), Avram (6-3, 6-0, fourth), and Martinetti (6-1, 6-2, fifth) all recorded wins on Saturday.
In his first match of the spring,
Felix Steen took sixth doubles by the score of 6-2, 6-4.
Columbus State will have a few days off before hosting another pair of top-10 teams in Columbus next weekend. CSU will take on No. 4 Wingate on Friday, March 13 and No. 10 Lynn on Sunday, March 15 at the Walden Tennis Center.Â
