Anderson's Last Second Shot Lifts Cougars Over Lander

Lorenzo Anderson hit an go-ahead jumper with two seconds on the clock as the Cougars grabbed an crucial road win.

Greenwood, S.C. - Lorenzo Anderson hit a fadeaway go-ahead jumper with two seconds on the clock to give the Columbus State University men's basketball team a 70-69 victory over Lander University Monday night. The Peach Belt Conference game took place inside Finis Horne Arena in Greenwood, S.C.

Down 69-68 with seven seconds to go, CSU (5-6, 5-6 PBC) inbounded in the frontcourt off a timeout where Anderson found himself with the ball. Just steps away from the 3-point line, the junior found space to put up the successful go-ahead shot.

"That was an awesome win for the guys," commented head coach Robert Moore. "What a play by Lorenzo at the end. He doesn't seem to get rattled and he showed that again."

How It Happened
First Half

It was tight from the opening tip with neither side leading by more than four until late in the first half. The Bearcats held a 22-20 edge at the 8:28 mark before a Hunter Preston 3-pointer jump-started a 14-4 Cougar run. The 3-ball was the catalyst with Kalen Clifton getting hot in the spurt as the senior nailed three in a row to give CSU a 34-26 average with 3:29 to play until the break. Lander (6-7, 4-5) cut the lead to two, 36-34, in the closing seconds, but three free throws by Christian Chambers gave Columbus State a 39-34 halftime advantage.

Second Half

After Chambers scored the opening bucket of the half, it was Lander's turn to go on a run. An 11-0 run by the Bearcats, including three 3-pointers, put the Cougars down by four, 45-41, less than four minutes into the half. From there, the two teams would not be separated by more than two possessions for the remainder of the game as the lead changed hands four times while the score was tied on seven occasions down the stretch. In a 59-all game with six minutes to go, an Anthony Moore layup gave CSU the lead and switched the momentum towards the Cougar bench. Columbus State remained ahead following another 3-pointer by Preston at the four-minute mark, but five straight points by LU, capped off by a successful 3-point play by Jermaine Patterson gave the Bearcats a 67-65 lead. On the next trip down the floor, a second-chance effort by Nelson Haskin tied the game at 67 with just 2:17 to play. Lander would go back in front on pair of free throws, while CSU missed a chance to go-ahead at the line after going 1-for-3 following a foul on a 3-point attempt. However, the Cougars found redemption. After Lander missed the front-end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds on the clock, the Cougars grabbed the rebound and called a timeout. Off the inbound, Anderson capped off his 10-point second-half performance with his game-winner to give Columbus State the win.
