LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Beginning the season on the road, the No. 5 Columbus State University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 21 the University of West Alabama on Saturday. The non-conference match took place at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
The Tigers (1-0) won all three doubles matches, including two tightly contested affairs. At first doubles, Sarah Manseri and Heden Ly edged
Beatriz Lopez and
Sara Ramirez Goncalves 7-6, while Haina Franco and Daryna Hukasian were 6-4 winners against
Amanda Citre and
Luise Sachs in the second spot. Morgan Bishop and Valeria Varevalo took third doubles over
Valentina Abrile and
Agostina Bigotti by a comfortable 6-1 margin.
Columbus State's (0-1) two victories came at first and second singles as Lopez and Sachs both bounced back from their doubles defeat. Lopez won a 6-3, 7-5 straight-set decision over Manseri at the top spot in singles action. After getting shutout in the first set, Sachs turned it on to win to come back for a 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against Franco.Â
Third and fourth singles saw West Alabama take three-set matches. Ly defeated Abrile 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the third position, while Goncalves lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to Yang at fourth singles. Bigotti dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match at sixth singles to Vidnere.
Arevalo added the final win for UWA at the fifth spot after Citre retired in the third set. Â
Columbus State will be right back in action Sunday at Auburn University Montgomery. All the action will begin at 1 p.m. at the AUM Tennis Complex.
