Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Josh Fuller

No. 2 Lander Defeats Lady Cougars 83-62

LU has now won 25 in a row on its home court.

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Columbus State University women's basketball team fell 83-62 to No. 2 Lander University on Monday night. The Peach Belt Conference game took place inside Finis Horne Arena.

Lander remains undefeated following the win improving to 15-0 on the year.

"The score might not show it, but I'm extremely proud of this team," commented head coach Matt Houser. "We showed some rust tonight, but you would expect that after a prolonged break like we had. We are extremely young and need to use these final games to continue to gel together and improve."

How It Happened
First Half

The first quarter was very competitive, with Columbus State (2-4, 2-4) answering nearly every Lander basket. After Olonna Rawls hit a 3-pointer to make it 8-6, a 9-3 Bearcat run gave the hosts a 17-9 lead with 4:40 to play in the quarter. CSU responded, scoring seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 3, 19-16. Three different players scored in the spurt, including a Jurnee Smith 3-pointer. Rawls hit her second trey of the first for CSU's final points as Lander took a 25-19 lead into the second. Columbus State pulled within four on two occasions early before the Bearcats extended the lead into double figures. Seven straight points by LU made it 38-25 at the 4:19 mark, but CSU didn't let things get away.  Buckets by Aryan Dozier and Madi Phillips and three free throws by Amber Abusbeih pulled Columbus State within six, 38-32, with 2:29 to play in the opening half. However, Lander scored the final nine points to go into the break ahead 47-35.

Second Half

Emilia Tenbrock had the first four points of the second half as the Lady Cougars again trimmed the margin back into single-digits. Columbus State was as close as seven on two occasions midway through the quarter. A Chrisalyn Boston layup with 4:25 on the clock made it a 52-45 game before a 10-3 run by the Bearcats pushed the lead to 14, 62-48. In the fourth, Lander took full control as nine straight points early on increased the lead to 23, 74-51, three minutes in. LU cruised the rest of the way to secure the win.
