Late Bucket Dooms Lady Cougars

Georgia Southwestern scored in the final seconds to escape with the road win.

COLUMBUS - Georgia Southwestern University scored a layup in the final seconds to escape the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center with a 74-73 victory over the Columbus State University women's basketball team on Wednesday night.

After Amber Abusbeih went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to put the Lady Cougars ahead 73-72 with 18 seconds to go and GSW called a timeout to advance the ball up the floor. The Hurricanes ran some clock after the inbound before Jaleah Storr stormed into the paint and made the game-winning bucket.

Columbus State's (2-5, 2-5 PBC) last-second desperation shot from beyond half court was unsuccessful.

"We were way too careless tonight, and it caught up to us," commented head coach Matt Houser. "There are many things that we have to sure up ourselves to start playing more consistently."

How It Happened
First Half

It was all Columbus State to open the game as four different Lady Cougars scored in a 9-0 spurt to begin the action. Emilia Tenbrock knocked down a 3-pointer to cap off the run. However, Georgia Southwestern came right back with eight consecutive points to immediately tighten things. The game of runs would continue. Up 11-10, another 9-0 run by CSU gave the hosts a 20-10 lead to end the quarter. Olonna Rawls nailed a trey at the buzzer off a pass from Abusbeih for the highlight of the quarter. Columbus State would stretch its lead to 13 points, 25-12, at the 6:43 mark in the second before a furious comeback by the Hurricanes. GSW proceeded to score 20 of the next 22 points to move in front 32-27 following a fastbreak 3-pointer by Lex Chatman with 1:40 showing on the clock. CSU would go 2-for-4 at the free throw line over the final 97 seconds to go into the break down 32-29.

Second Half

The final 20 minutes were tight. GSW was up 38-35 until the Lady Cougars found their stroke from downtown. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Tenbrock and Rawls seesawed CSU back ahead 41-40 midway through the third. After a Georgia Southwestern technical, Columbus State saw its lead increase to six, 46-40, thanks to a pair of free throws by Abusbeih and Jurnee Smith's second 3-pointer of the half. The 3-point fest would continue with Tenbrock connecting from beyond the arc at the 2:36 mark to make the score 52-44. A pair of Chrisalyn Boston free throws gave Columbus State a 55-48 advantage going into the fourth. It looked like CSU would cruise to the win after Aryan Dozier began the fourth with three straight points to give the Lady Cougars a 10-point lead, 58-48, with just 8:02 to play. Georgia Southwestern had different plans though. In a 63-57 game, Storr scored six straight points on consecutive 3-pointers to tie things. Columbus State wouldn't relinquish the lead though with Abusbeih breaking a deadlock at 69 with a clutch 3-pointer with 1:54 remaining. Down one and with less than a minute to go, Storr knotted the game at 72 after going one-for-one at the line. Following a Lady Cougar steal, Abusbeih would do the same, giving CSU a 73-72 lead and GSW the chance for the final shot. Storr would capitalize with the game-winning bucket to give the Canes the win.
