Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Josh Fuller

Lady Cougars, Flagler Battle to a Draw

The match saw a combined 50 shots.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University women's soccer team and Flagler College battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Sunday afternoon. The two Peach Belt Conference powers met at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The match featured 50 combined shots, with each side having a chance for the go-ahead goal late.

"This was a fun match to be in," stated head coach Jay Entlich. "These are the ones that you want to be apart of for sure. The goalkeeping today was just unbelievable, and Bria (Riancho) kept us alive all day. I give a ton of credit to Flagler. They are always so prepared and have a lot of talent on that team."

Flagler (2-0-1, 2-0-1 PBC) came out hot, recording the first shot of the game in the second minute, but it was Columbus State who then controlled the pace of play. The Lady Cougars fired off five shots over the next eight minutes, including one by Kimmy Edgeworth that nearly crossed the goal line before an FC defender kicked it to safety.

The Saints would keep Bria Riancho busy in net beginning in the 16th minute. The senior kept out three shots before the 30th minute of action, including a full-out diving effort on a Sara Sandberg shot attempt. However, FC finally broke through at the 37th-minute mark. Emery Biggs played a ball through the CSU backline to Jess Leach. Leach took a shot from inside the box that Riancho deflected, but the carom was able to inch across the line for the goal.

CSU had two more shots before the half ended, while Riancho kept another Leach attempt out of the net.

Flagler kept on the attack to begin the second half. The Saints put up four shots on goal before the 60th minute, but Riancho was there each time.

It was Columbus State (2-0-1, 2-0-1 PBC) who went on the offensive following another Riancho save. In the 63rd minute, Maddy Peterson dribbled towards the end line before flipping a pass into the box. Rachael Sweigard was there and headed it home to tie the match at one.

It was Sweigard once again in the 68th minute that nearly put the Lady Cougars ahead. The junior fired a shot from around 20-yards out that Sarah-Lisa Dubel tapped over the crossbar.

Flagler had a few good chances to find the go-ahead goal late in regulation, including a shot by Maria Castorino-Mujica that hit the crossbar. Riancho was also needed for two more saves and made the save of the day on another Sandberg shot in the 76th minute.

Carley Canzoneri nearly had a 90th-minute goal, but her last-second effort went just high.

Both goalkeepers continued to come up clutch in the overtime periods. Each had to make a game-saving stop in the final two minutes of the first 10-minute OT period, while the final 10 minutes saw seven total shots between the sides. Dubel made three saves, including stonewalling a dangerous attempt by Sweigard in the 108th minute. FC had three shots in the second OT period, but none were on target.
