Cougar Softball Heads to No. 17 Young Harris

The CSU softball team will play their first PBC matchup on Saturday against Young Harris.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team will finally enter Peach Belt Conference this weekend as the Cougars head to Young Harris, Ga. for a doubleheader against the No. 17 Mountain Lions on Saturday.. The first pitch is at 2 p.m. at the YHC Softball Field.

The Cougars (10-6) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday after dropping a pair of games against the University of Montevallo. Columbus State is looking to improve to 2-3 on the road this year, as Young Harris College (13-4, 2-0 PBC) looks to up its record to 6-1 at home.

• Paige Vincent led the Cougars offensively against Montevallo as the second-year freshman finished the day 5-for-8 with an  RBI. Hannah Rose Corbin, Caitlyn Canady and Elyse Ambrose each added home runs versus the Falcons.

• The Cougars are still at the top in nearly every PBC hitting category. CSU leads the conference with a .448 on-base percentage and is tied for first with Georgia Southwestern University with 18 homers. Columbus State ranks second with 97 runs scored, right behind Young Harris who has scored 125 times already this season. 

• Hannah Rose Corbin leads the conference in home runs with seven and is currently tied for second in the nation. The third-year sophomore also leads the PBC in on-base percentage (.623) and walks (23), while ranking second in slugging percentage (1.028) and runs scored (17). 

• Caitlyn Canady has stayed hot at the plate as the second-year freshman is on a 12-game hitting streak. Canady hit her second home run on the season in the first game against Montevallo and went 3-for-4 in the second game. She has collected a team-high 20 hits and has delivered 11 RBIs. 

• CSU has struggled in the circle recently as the team's ERA has moved to 3.88.

• Young Harris holds a 13-4 record and is 2-0 in PBC action so far in 2021. YHC is on a three-game winning streak after sweeping USC Aiken on Thursday and splitting a doubleheader with Emmanuel College on Saturday, March 6.

• The Mountain Lions lead the PBC in runs scored (125) and stolen bases (36), while ranking third in batting average (.308). Five players are hitting over .300, including Biz Walters, Carly Rigsbee, Ashley Autuori, Jill Torres and Emily Harris.

• Walters leads Young Harris' offense as she carries a .485 batting average with adding 20 hits. The senior is on a six-game hitting streak, including a 1-for-2 and 3-for-4 performance against USC Aiken on Thursday. 

• Emily Harris is the speedster for Young Harris. Harris ranks second in the conference with 11 stolen bases, while being tied for first with 17 runs scored, along with Corbin. Harris leads the Mountain Lions with 21 hits and has a .328 batting average.

• Young Harris has a deep pitching staff including Jill Dixon and Sam Davis. Dixon holds a 1.84 ERA and is 4-0 with 29 strikeouts. Davis (4-2, 3.24 ERA) has struck out a team-high 33.

Series History

• The Cougars and Mountain Lions have met 19 different times in the past ten years, with the first meeting being on Feb. 25, 2011 in Columbus.

• The teams did not play each other in 2020 as COVID-19 ended the season before their meeting.

• Columbus State leads the all-time series 13-6.
