COLUMBUS - The No. 14 Columbus State University women's tennis team won a 5-2 match over No. 13 Wingate University on Saturday. The non-conference top-25 showdown took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
CSU (5-3) handed Wingate (5-1) its first loss of the year while picking up its fourth straight win.
Columbus State swept doubles as each Lady Cougar team beat their Bulldog opponents.
The duo of
Candice Paya and
Beatriz Lopez grabbed the 6-4 number one singles win against Elena Bompieri and Elena Gunfaus.
Valentina Abrile and
Sara Ramirez Goncalves took second doubles, downing Camilla Ciaccia and Jessica Ruetten 6-3. At third doubles, the pair of
Amanda Citre and
Luise Sachs defeated Georgina Wood and Flaminia Guidantoni in a 6-2 match.
Four Lady Cougars came out on top in singles. Lopez played Ciaccia at the top spot and swept her 6-0, 6-0. Sachs then went into three sets with Bompieri in the second position, outlasting her for 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 victory. Abrile grabbed the fourth singles by beating Wood 7-6, 6-2. Ramirez Goncalves rounded out the day by dominating Riann Hsu 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles.
Agostina Bigotti lost a close 6-4; 7-6 match at fifth singles to Guidantoni, while Paya fell 6-3, 6-1 in the third spot.
Columbus State will return to John W. Walden Tennis Center on Saturday, March 20 for a doubleheader against No. 7 Southwest Baptist University at 9 a.m. and the University of Montevallo at 2 p.m.
