Softball Set to Face Division I Mercer

Wednesday's doubleheader will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team will face its biggest challenge yet, traveling to take on Division I Mercer University on Wednesday, March 3. The doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. at Sikes Field in Macon, Ga.

The Cougars (10-4) are on a season-best six-game winning streak following sweeps over Emmanuel College, Miles College and Shorter University. 

Sikes Field's capacity will be capped at 30% on Wednesday, with admission being limited to individuals on the official team pass list only. The doubleheader will air on ESPN+ (active subscription required) with live statistics available on CSUCougars.com.

Cougar Notes

• The Cougar offense has exploded during their six-game winning streak. CSU is averaging over 8.3 runs per game while outscoring its opponents 53-14. The Cougars have launched seven homers, including three in a single-game against Miles. 

• Hannah Rose Corbin is becoming one of the top sluggers in the nation. Sitting atop of CSU's order, the third-year sophomore is leading all of NCAA Division II with six home runs this season, while ranking fourth in the nation in total bases (33) and 20th in RBIs (11). She is also inside the top-10 in the Peach Belt Conference in slugging percentage (4th, 1.031), on-base percentage (5th, .623) and hits (10th, 12). Corbin will take a four-game hitting streak into Wednesday's doubleheader.   

• On Tuesday, Corbin was awarded the PBC Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career. In the four games, the Clanton, Ala. native went 7-for-10 with a triple and four home runs, including smacking a grand slam versus Miles. She posted a .824 on-base percentage after drawing seven walks while scoring nine times and driving in seven. The dual-threat was also 2-0 in the circle with a complete-game performance against Shorter. 

• True freshman Lindsey Patton delivered Columbus State's first walkoff hit of the year in the 4-3 win over Shorter on Sunday.  

• Katelyn Cooper continues to be consistent at the plate as the second-year freshman collected two hits in each game on Saturday. Cooper leads the Cougars and ranks third in the PBC with a .522 average and second with a .633 on-base percentage. She is on a five-game hitting streak and has recorded a team-leading five stolen bases.

• Caitlyn Canady has a hit in 12 of CSU's 14 games this season, including one in each of the past 10. She has 16 hits on the year, the third-most in the PBC, to go along with nine RBIs and 12 runs.

About Mercer

• Mercer, members of the Southern Conference, has an overall record of 5-6 and are 5-2 in Macon this season. The only losses have come against the University of Pittsburgh (7-2) and the University of Toledo (2-1, 8 innings).

• Elisa Rosado will be the player to watch for the Bears as the sophomore leads MU in almost every hitting category. In 36 at-bats, Rosado has 13 hits (.361 avg.), including four doubles and two triples. She is a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts and has scored a team-high eight runs.

• Danielle Castleberry is another threat to the Beats offense. The redshirt senior is leading the team with a .375 average, with two of her 12 hits being doubles.

• Five different players have hit home runs this season for Mercer, including senior first baseman Bree Comer.

• The Bears have struggled inside the circle through 11 games, holding a team ERA of 4.31. However, Madi Joyce has been a bright spot as the freshman is 2-0 and has held opponents to a .217 average. In 27 innings, Joyce has struck out 20 with a 2.85 ERA. Ashlyn Donner and Amber Byrd have been relied on heavily behind Joyce. 

Series History

• Columbus State and Mercer will be meeting for the first time since the 1993 season on Wednesday. The Cougars lead the all-time series 10-6.

• The Cougars were rolling before the series went on a hiatus. CSU had won two in a row and five of the past six against the Bears.
