Softball Back at Cougar Field

The Cougars will play a doubleheader against Georgia College on Sunday, March 21 in Columbus.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team has been on the road since February 27 but will finally return to Columbus on Sunday to host Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Cougar Field. 

The Cougars (10-8, 0-2 PBC) are on a four-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games against the University of Montevallo and No. 17 Young Harris College. It's the second PBC doubleheader of the year for CSU but the first at Cougar Field. 

Columbus State will be allowing fans on Sunday. Spectators must wear masks/face coverings at all times (unless eating or drinking) and adhere to physical distancing guidelines. Stand seating will be limited. Admission is free of charge.

Fans will be permitted to this weekend's doubleheaders; however, COVID-19 health and safety protocols must be followed including:

• Masks/Face Coverings are required to be worn at all times while on the campus of Columbus State University

• At least six feet of physical distancing between spectators

• Temperature checks upon entry

In addition, limited fan stand-seating at Cougar Field will be available with additional green space for viewing opportunities.

Cougar Notes

• Columbus State hasn't played a game in a full week as a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday against the University of West Florida was postponed due to rainy weather. The Cougars last played Young Harris on March 13, dropping both games 6-2 and 7-3.

• In the doubleheader against YHC, Hannah Rose CorbinCaitlyn Canady, and Paige Vincent led the Cougar offense. Vincent was a perfect 4-for-4 in game two as the second-year freshman went 3-for-3 with a double. Corbin jacked her eighth homer of the season in game one and finished the day going 3-for-6 with two RBIs, while Canady was 3-for-5 with a double and two sacrifices.

• Vincent's performance in Young Harris moved her up the leaderboard in batting average. The second-year freshman is fourth on the team with a .326 average and has two doubles in 2021.

• Corbin still ranks near the top in multiple hitting categories inside the PBC. The slugger leads the league, and ranks third among all DII players, with eight home runs, while also topping the PBC in walks (25) and runs (18). She is second in slugging percentage (1.024), third in on-base percentage (.623) and sixth in RBIs (15). 

• Canady carries a 14-game hitting streak into Sunday's doubleheader. The second-year freshman is tied for second in the PBC in hits (23) and is one of five players in the conference with two triples on the year. 

• The Cougars rank inside the top-5 in the conference in almost every hitting category. CSU is first in home runs (19), second in on-base percentage (.437), third in runs scored (102), fourth in slugging percentage (.509) and stolen bases (23) and fifth in batting average (.309).

• Columbus State will look to improve inside the circle as the team ranks ninth in ERA (4.29). Harley Dawson has been the go-to for the Cougars as the fifth-year senior is 3-2 in her 45.2 innings of work. Dawson has recorded 40 strikeouts and posts a 3.94 ERA over 11 appearances.

Bobcat Notes

• Georgia College is 4-12 overall and 0-2 in PBC play heading into Sunday. The Bobcats dropped a pair of games to Augusta University on March 13, 4-2 and 5-4. GC is 4-6 on the road so far this season.

• Freshmen Samantha Vinson and Lauren Sommerer lead the Bobcats at the plate holding averages of .360 and .370, respectively. Vinson has a team-high 18 hits, including six doubles and two homers, and has driven in 12. Sommerer is right behind her with 17 hits and has tallied six RBIs.

• Sadie Waters and Katelyn Hobbs are also offensive threats for Georgia College. Hobbs leads Georgia College in home runs with three while adding four doubles. Waters has five doubles and is hitting .356.

• As a team, the Bobcats hold a .268 batting average, .354 on-base percentage and .384 slugging percentage.

• Georgia College struggles in the circle with a team ERA of 5.71.  MacKenzie Michels leads GC with a 4.40 ERA and a 2-4 record.

Series History

• Columbus State and Georgia College have been meeting since the 1992 season, with the Cougars holding a 48-30 all-time advantage.

• CSU has won the last three in the series, including sweeping GC in the two teams' last doubleheader during the 2019 season.

• In the 2019 doubleheader, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to grab a 8-7 walkoff victory. Morgan Elston scored the game-winning to give CSU the sweep.
