COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team's bats were on fire on Sunday as the Cougars swept Georgia College 10-1 and 11-1, both in five innings. CSU improved to 12-8 while GC fell to 4-14.
GAME 1: CSU 10-1 (5 inn.)
Georgia College scored their lone run of game one in the first inning off of an RBI sacrifice bunt from Samantha Vinson.
From there on out, it was the Cougar show.
Caitlyn Canady led off the bottom of the first with a single through the right side and then stole second base seconds after.
Hannah Rose Corbin jacked a two-run home run to left field, giving CSU a 2-1 lead.
Morgan Elston got on base with a single through the left side to put
Lindsey Patton at the plate. Elston stole second, then Patton hit a single to centerfield to score Elston, making the score 3-1.
It was Canady again in the bottom of the second as the second-year freshman ripped a triple down the left field line, scoring
Madeline Parker who singled earlier in the inning (4-1). Patton collected her second RBI of the game and extended Columbus State's lead to four when she singled in the third to score Cooper.
The Cougars ended the game in the fourth as they scored five runs off of four hits and one Bobcat error. Canady picked up her third RBI with another single through the left side, which allowed
Laura Harris to score from second.
Katelyn Cooper then doubled to left field to score Canady.
Paige Vincent hit a fielder's choice to the shortstop but collected an RBI as Cooper scored.
Elston was the decision for the Cougars to take game one as the righty cranked a two-run opposite field homer to right field, making it a 10-1 ballgame.
Corbin improved her record to 5-4 on the mound, while Holly Phillips fell to 1-3.
Canady was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Elston and Patton were both 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
GAME 2: 11-1 (5 inn.)
Columbus State scored 11 runs and batted around the lineup in the first inning to steal the second game of the doubleheader.
Vincent hit a two-run RBI single to left field to make it a quick 2-0 ballgame. Back-to-back homers from Elston (3 runs) and Patton (1 run) extended the lead to six. After a Bobcat fielding error and throwing error, the Cougars were able to score two more runs.
The pair of Elston and Patton struck again in their second plate appearances of the inning. With bases loaded, Elston picked up another RBI after walking to make the score 9-0. Patton then singled through the right side to score Cooper, and Corbin scored on the throw.
The Bobcats were able to score one run in the top of the second when the pitcher Golden Thrower homered to right center.
Patton finished 2-for-2, hitting her first collegiate home run and collecting two RBIs. Elston went 1-for-2 with four RBIs, hitting her second homer of the day and fourth of the season. Canady went 2-for-3 with a double.
After walking four times in a row, Corbin extended the amount of times she's been walked this season to 28.
Harley Dawson and
Riley Patton split the game on the mound, with Dawson earning the win and improving to 3-2.
The Cougars will be back at Cougar Field on Wednesday, March 24 in a non-conference doubleheader against the University of West Georgia, starting at 4 p.m.
