Baseball Beats Albany State in Midweek Game

The Cougars beat the Golden Rams 8-3 in Wednesday's non-conference game.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University baseball team beat Albany State 8-3 on Wednesday. The non-conference game took place at Ragsdale Field at Burger King Stadium in Columbus.

The Cougars improved to 10-6, 8-6 PBC, while the Golden Rams fell to 10-6.

Columbus State starter Timbo Trawick allowed no runs in the first two innings, striking out four of the first nine hitters he faced. However, Albany State hit the board first in the bottom of the third inning when Wyatt Setian hit a three-run home run over the left field fence, making it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Cougars responded in the bottom of the third when Isaac Bouton singled through the left side, scoring Connor Kirley who led off the inning with a walk. CSU kept the momentum going into the fourth, as Jake Hershman came in to pitch for Trawick and struck out three. In the next half of the inning, the Cougars minimized the Golden Rams' lead to only one with a Matt McDade double down the left field line to score Colby Brabston from first base.

Columbus State took a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh when Bouton and Robert Brooks hit back-to-back home runs. Bouton homered to left field, scoring Steven Minter who led off with a single. Brooks' homer was a solo shot, his first hit of the day after getting hit by a pitch three at bats in a row.

CSU scored the final runs of the game in the eighth when Michael Reddick came in to pitch for ASU. David Meadows led off with a double, advanced to third on a McDade bunt-single and ended up scoring off of a wild pitch, making it 6-3. Reddick hit Minter and walked two more, which allowed McDade to score. Win Johns made it 8-3 with a sacrifice line drive to left field.

Hershman earned his first win as a Cougar. In the six innings he pitched, the senior struckout 10 while walking two and only allowing one hit. Brock Rountree collected his first loss for Albany State.

Bouton went a perfect 4-for-4 with three singles and a homer, collecting three RBIs. McDade hit an RBI double and bunted for a single, ending the day going 2-for-4. Brooks hit his eighth homer of the season after having three hit-by-pitches.
