Cougar Softball Back in PBC Play Against Flagler

CSU will host Flagler College on Saturday, March 27 with the first pitch starting at 1 p.m.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team is back in Peach Belt Conference play Saturday after sweeping the University of West Georgia 4-0 and 5-2 in a non-conference doubleheader at Cougar Field.

The Cougars (14-8, 2-2 PBC) will host rival Flagler College (8-10, 2-2 PBC) on March 27 for a doubleheader with the first pitch starting at 1 p.m.

Columbus State will be allowing fans on Saturday. Spectators must wear masks/face coverings at all times (unless eating or drinking) and adhere to physical distancing guidelines. Stand seating will be limited. Admission is free of charge.

Cougar fans can watch the games live on Cougar Sports TV and follow along with live statistics.

Fans will be permitted to this weekend's doubleheaders; however, COVID-19 health and safety protocols must be followed including:

• Masks/Face Coverings are required to be worn at all times while on the campus of Columbus State University

• At least six feet of physical distancing between spectators

• Temperature checks upon entry

In addition, limited fan stand-seating at Cougar Field will be available with additional green space for viewing opportunities.

• Hannah Rose Corbin tied a CSU record with 19 strikeouts in the opening game against West Georgia on Wednesday. She pitched a 4-0 shutout before coming on in the nightcap to punch out five more to save a 5-2 Cougar victory. Corbin's 24 strikeouts helped Columbus State move to first place in strikeouts within the PBC (143). The second-year sophomore is still present inside the top-10 in almost every hitting category within the conference.

• Caitlyn Canady went 3-for-4 with two doubles against the Wolves, extending her hitting streak to 18 games. The second-year freshman remains at the top of the conference in hits (32), tied for second with triples (3),  fifth in batting average (.451) and fourth in runs scored (20). 

• Katelyn Cooper was a combined 3-for-7 on Wednesday, including a double. Cooper ranks fourth in the PBC with a .462 batting average. 

• Columbus State ranks in the top-5 in multiple hitting categories within the conference, including ranking second in runs scored (132), homers (24) and on-base percentage (.439), while sitting third in slugging percentage (.530), fourth in batting average (.317) and fifth in stolen bases (30).

• The Cougars are entering Saturday on a four-game winning streak.

• Flagler College is entering Columbus on a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games to the University of North Georgia on Monday 2-0 and 8-0. The Saints two wins within the PBC came from a doubleheader against USC Aiken on March 20.

• The Saints hold a .255 team batting average, ranking 10th in the PBC. Bella Munoz leads the team with a .340 average and a .444 on-base percentage, including two doubles and one triple.

• Valerie Beltre is hitting .339 and has the most hits for Flagler with 19 out of her 56 at bats. However, Beltre only has two RBIs.

• Kyleigh Taylor is the run producer for the Saints, posting 14 RBIs with four homers and three doubles. Morgan Murphy and Alyssa Velez are other power threats to the FC lineup as they both have hit three balls over the fence this season.

• Kyra Gipson is Flagler's ace inside the circle as the senior posts a 1.85 ERA in 12 appearances, starting eight. Gipson has struck out 60, placing her fourth in the conference.
