Box Score ALBANY, Ga. - The Columbus State University softball team scored eight runs in the sixth and added seven more in the sixth to grab a 16-4 mercy-rule victory over Albany State University on Tuesday. The non-conference game took place at Golden Rams Field.
The Cougars (17-8) came to the plate in the fifth down 4-1 before the bats woke up.
Maddie Dodson started a remarkable run at the plate with a leadoff homer in the frame before back-to-back singles by
Madeline Parker and
Laura Harris put runners on the bases. Following a groundout,
Katelyn Cooper ripped a run-scoring double while
Hannah Rose Corbin followed with a two-run single to put CSU on top 5-4.Â
The runs didn't stop there.
Lindsey Patton capped off a string of three straight singles by legging out a hit that pushed across pinch-runner Kristin Odum to make it 6-4 before Dodson continued to do damage. With the bases loaded, the catcher ripped a double to left, scoring all three runners to put CSU comfortably ahead.Â
After
Riley Patton produced a shutdown inning in the circle, the Cougars went back to work at the plate in the sixth. The powerful CSU lineup flexed its muscles in the frame with three homers to score six runs. Corbin started the home run derby in the inning with a two-run shot following a leadoff triple by
Caitlyn Canady before the Cougar closed the scoring with back-to-back jacks. L. Patton got in all the action with a three-run bomb before Dodson closed out her day with her second homer of the day and third straight extra-base hit. A bases-loaded walk with Corbin at the plate forced home the 16th run of the game.
Dodson (3-for-4, 2B, 2 HR) and Corbin (2-for-4, HR) each had five RBIs for the Cougars. L. Patton (3-for-4, HR) drove in four, while Canady (2-for-4) had a double and a triple.Â
R. Patton (5-2) recorded the win in the circle after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Harley Dawson allowed four runs (two earned) in the two 1-inning start.
Lexy Head pitched the final inning for the Cougars.
Columbus State will carry its seven-game winning streak to Augusta, Ga. on Friday for a doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference rival Augusta University. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at Jaguar Field.Â
