ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Columbus State University women's soccer team battled third-ranked Flagler College to a 1-1 tie before eventually falling 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout in the 2021 Spring Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday. The match took place at Saints Field in St. Augustine, Fla.
It was a frenzy over the final 15 minutes of the match. With the score still scoreless entering the 76th minute, FC (8-0-2) found the back of the net off a corner kick. Lorena Lopez was the one to find the goal.
However, it didn't take long for Columbus State (6-1-2) to answer. In the 78th minute,
Maddy Peterson made a run into FC territory before firing off a shot from about 15 yards out to beat Sarah-Lisa Dubel for the equalizer.
Each side had dangerous looks at goal, but neither scored before regulation ended.
The Saints had the only shot in the first 10-minute overtime period, while a Peterson attempt was blocked in the 105th minute.
In the penalty kick shootout, the Lady Cougars missed two of its first three kicks, thanks to two diving saves by Dubel, while FC made its first three.
Columbus State ends its season with a 6-1-2 record after reaching the program's 13th PBC Tournament championship match.
