No. 1 Cougars Cap Off Perfect Regular Season

CSU finished regular-season play with a 17-0 record.

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team made program history after its 7-0 victory over Young Harris College on Tuesday. The match took place at the Bob and Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Cougars (17-0) become the first team in the NCAA DII era (1973) to finish the season with an undefeated record. It's also the first time a male's team didn't lose a single point in conference play.

"I'm super proud of this group of young men," commented head coach Evan Isaacs. "This is a tremendous accomplishment of them, and they should take a moment to take this in. But, we have plenty of work to do and many obstacles still left in this season."

CSU was rolling again in doubles play, not dropping more than three games in any of the three matches. At the top spot, second-ranked Alvaro Regalado and Javier Cueto Ramos defeated Ignacio Ascarrunz and Kash Reddiyar 6-1. Christian Garay and Felix Steen were not stressed in the second position taking down John Brett and Herman Ronnberg 6-2. Pietro Martinetti and Tommaso Schold also finished the regular season with a perfect 15-0 record after a 6-3 win over Eric DelValle and Romeo Luque.

In singles play, Cueto Ramos was the first to wrap up his match with a 6-1, 6-0 result over Brett. Martinetti was equally impressive, breezing by DelValle 6-1, 6-1. At second singles, 14th-ranked Garay also won by a 6-1, 6-1 margin against Rodrigo Mendoza.

As he did in doubles play, 28th-ranked Schold grabbed a win after defeating Ascarrunz 6-2, 6-4. Second-ranked Regalado won his 10th straight match at first singles on Tuesday by taking down Reddiyar 6-2, 7-5. Steen had to work hard to win the first set 7-6 (11-9) over Luque before finishing him off in the second set by the score of 6-3.

Columbus State will be off until the semifinal round of the PBC Tournament. The match will be held on Monday, April 26 in Columbus.
