Men's Tennis Back in National Semifinals, Down No. 29 Cameron

The Cougars are in the NCAA Championship semifinals for the fourth straight year.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The perfect season continues for the top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team as the Cougars swept 29th-ranked Cameron University 4-0 in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.

The top-seeded Cougars (22-0) are back in the national semifinals for the fourth straight season and will take on fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked University of Hawaii - Hilo on Wednesday. The Vulcans defeated 22nd-ranked Concordia University (NY) 4-2 in their semifinal match.

"I'm glad that we got the first one under our belts," commented head coach Evan Isaacs. "The guys played well after a long trip out here against a talented Cameron group. Tomorrow is going to be a short turnaround, and we have to have to be ready for a challenging match."

CSU began its eighth straight sweep by winning second and third doubles to grab the first point of the evening. Felix Steen and Christian Garay were the first to wrap things up at the second spot, defeating Maycon Dias and Joao Duleba 6-3. The duo of Pietro Martinetti and Tommaso Schold stayed perfect on the year thanks to a 6-1 victory at third doubles over Alvaro Chavez and Carols Vidal.

First doubles featured a top-10 showdown with top-ranked Alavaro Regalado and Javier Cueto Ramos leading eighth-ranked Bruno Vietri and Oscar del Granado 4-1 when play stopped.

Columbus State put away a stubborn Cameron (12-8) team in singles play by winning in the third, fourth and sixth spots. The Cougars didn't drop a set in any of the six matches en route to the victory.

Schold gave the Cougars their first singles wins at third singles in a straight-set decision. The 32nd-ranked player in the nation took down Dias 6-4, 6-2. At fourth singles, Cueto Ramos was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Chavez to inch Columbus State closer to the semifinals.

Jusin Welz slammed the door shut on the Aggies at sixth singles. The freshman was impressive, running by Vidal 6-2, 6-1.

In the unfinished matches, second-ranked Regalado was nearing a ranked win over 47th-ranked Vierti. The All-American was up 6-4, 6-1. Fifth singles was the tightest where Steen was up a set, but down 5-4 to Joao Duleba in the second.

Columbus State carries a 31-match winning streak into the semifinal match against Hawaii - Hilo. With the win, the Cougars will advance to the program's third straight NCAA DII national championship match.
