Cougars, Bobcats Set for PBC Showdown in Columbus

Georgia College is currently in second in the PBC standings.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University men's basketball team will look to rebound from an overtime loss on Saturday as the Cougars host Georgia College in a key Peach Belt Conference game. Tipoff is at 3:30 p.m. inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center.

LAST TIME OUT
• Georgia Southwestern University stormed back over the final minutes in regulation and eventually clipped the Cougars 70-67 in overtime on Wednesday in Columbus. Four players scored at least 11 points for CSU led by 16 from Langston Gaither. Nelson Haskin had 14 points, seven rebounds and a season-high seven blocks. 

CSU NOTES
• Wednesday's loss was just the second at home this season for the Cougars. CSU is 6-2 inside the Lumpkin Center in 2021-22. 
• CSU is 9-2 this season when winning the rebounding margin. The Cougars were out-rebounded 55-38 on Wednesday and have failed to win the battle on the glass over the last four games. 
• Gaither is leading the PBC in scoring in conference games only. The guard is averaging 20.1 points against PBC foes this season and has scored at least 12 points in 10 straight.
• Haskin (7.4 reb/g, 4th) and Hunter Preston (6.6 reb/g, 10th) are both inside the top-10 in the PBC in rebounding. Haskin is fourth in the nation (DII level) in total blocks with 46.  
• The Cougars will close out the month of January with a winning record with a win. So far, CSU is 4-3 in the month. 

SCOUTING GEORGIA COLLEGE
• Georgia College (15-3, 7-2) enters Columbus on a three-game winning streak and winners of five of its last six games.
• Jordan Thomas, one of the top players in the league, is averaging 16.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for GC. Thomas was named to the Small College Basketball and the National Awards Committee's top-100 Watch List for the Bevo Francis Award. The award honors the top player from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA Division I, NAIA Division II, USCAA and NCCAA.
• Wesley Simpson is averaging 14.1 points and leads the team with a 6.1 rebounding average. Christian Koneman (7.9 ppg) is shooting 34.6% from 3-point range. 
• GC already has two wins in Columbus this season. The Bobcats defeated Miles College and Tuskegee University in the 2021 Herbert Greene Classic on Dec. 3 and 4. 

SERIES HISTORY
• Georgia College is one of CSU's oldest rivalries with the series beginning in the early 1970s. The Cougars hold a commanding 53-29 series lead.
• GC won a defensive 59-49 battle in Columbus last season in the only meeting between the teams last season. The Bobcats outscored the Cougars 36-25 in the second half to grab the win.
