COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus State University women's soccer season continues as they defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex. The shutout is Columbus State's 13th of the season.
Cougarville was loud from the get-go as CSU hosted this second-round matchup. It was as an evenly played first half with both teams having eight shots on goal and one corner kick. The saves were close as well, four for Columbus State and two for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Lizzie Hedrick and
Sara Halilhodzic both had four saves a piece in goal.
The story and play of the day was in the 80th minute of the game. After stealing a possession,
Lauren Barnes found herself 1-on-1 with a LRU defender. Barnes used her speed and slipped by going out wide to the right, planted her left foot, and struck the ball with her right, bending the ball all the way to the left side of the net for CSU's only goal of the day. This shot will go down in CSU women's history.
Although being out shot 19-17, CSU was able to hold off LRU for 15 more minutes to punch their ticket to the third round of the tournament.
