AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Columbus State University women's basketball team lost a nail-biter Monday evening against Augusta, the first Peach Belt Conference matchup of the season for the Lady Cougars. After the 47-48 loss, CSU falls to 5-3 (0-1 PBC), while AU improves to 7-2 (1-1 PBC).
The Lady Jaguars took a 16-10 lead after the first period of play, but the Lady Cougars were able to hold AU to only scoring nine points in the second quarter, heading into halftime with only a 25-19 lead. CSU came out of the locker rooms with energy, minimizing the Lady Jags lead to only two points heading into the final period.
With 4:39 left to play,
Simone Lett gave CSU a one-point lead with a made layup. Just seconds later,
Amber Abusbeih scored a fastbreak layup to give the Lady Cougars a three-point lead. However, it was back-and-forth for the final three minutes. AU was able to take the lead with just under three minutes to play, scoring four more points. A made jump-shot by
Letiya Reeves put CSU up by one again, but a CSU foul took Augusta's Tomiyah Alford to the free-throw line, who made the game-winning shots to give AU the one-point lead with just two seconds left.
Reeves recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She also tallied three steals and one block.
Emilia Tenbrock added 12 points and eight rebounds.
