COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team split on the first day of the 2022 Cougar Classic at Cougar Field. The Cougars beat the University of Montevallo (3-3) 5-2, but then fell to Coker University 3-0 in the final game Friday night.
Game 1: CSU 5, UM 2
Sierra Easterwood was the highlight for Montevallo, hitting two home runs. Easterwood led off the top of the first inning with a solo shot, then did it again in the sixth.
Columbus State answered in the bottom of the second, with
Katelyn Cooper ripping a two-run homer to center field.
Morgan Elston extended CSU's lead to 3-1 after hitting an RBI single to left field to score
Hannah Rose Corbin.
Like the Falcons, the Cougars also scored in the sixth with a Corbin RBI double to right field, followed up with a
Kenzie Bayer sacrifice fly-out to center.
"Hannah Rose did a great job pitching and not just throwing," commented head coach Brad Huskisson. "That performance was our best situational hitting of the year. That's how we we should score and play."
CSU had seven hits in the win, with Corbin and Elston each having two and an RBI apiece.
Corbin pitched a complete game and picked up her first win inside the circle, striking out 12 Montevallo players and only allowing two runs.
Game 2: CU 3, CSU 0
Coker out-hit Columbus State 8-3, giving the Cobras the 3-0 win Friday night.Â
The Cobras jumped on CSU starter
Jessica Lopez in the first inning, scoring two runs thanks to a Kayla Oswell RBI double to center field.
In the fourth, Coker's Ariana Fair jacked an RBI triple to right field, giving the Cobras a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars had a few runners in scoring position, but couldn't find the offensive power to get them around the bases.
Caitlyn Canady went 2-for-4 with a double, while Elston (1-3) added a double.
"We've got to find those clutch hits to score runs" said Huskisson. "We can't work hard to get runners on base and then not score them."
CSU left two seven runners on base.
