COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team grabbed a thrilling 5-4 win over Union University on day two of the 2022 Cougar Classic at Cougar Field. The Cougars improved to 3-4 while the Bulldogs fell to 2-4.
Both teams were scoreless going into the fourth until Union took a 1-0 with back-to-back doubles. Two batters later, Kira Finkley extended the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence.
The Cougars bounced right back and tied things up at three in the bottom of the fourth.
Hannah Rose Corbin singled and stole second to put her in scoring position for
Morgan Elston. Elston jacked a two-run bomb to center field, closing Union's lead to just one run.
Laura Harris continued the Cougar rally with a single to third base and quickly made her way around the bases thanks to a
Kenzie Bayer single to left field, tying the ballgame.
Corbin entered the circle in the top of the fifth to relieve starter
Haylee Folds, who pitched well.
Elston came in clutch again in the bottom of the fifth, ripping a two-run double to the left field fence, scoring
Caitlyn Canady and
Taylor Currie.
Down 5-3 in the sixth, the Bulldogs kept CSU on their toes with a Brooke Puckett RBI single up the middle, making it 5-4.
However that would be all for Union as Corbin was humming in the seventh to slam the door shut on the Bulldogs.
"Folds and Hannah Rose did a good job tonight," commented head coach
Brad Huskisson. "We made a couple big plays on defense, especially
Madeline Parker's diving grab late. Our offense is starting to wake up and do what it is suppose to."
Corbin picked up her second win inside the circle (2-1) as she struck out five in three innings of work.
Elston went 2-for-3 with four RBIs with Canady also adding two hits.
