COLUMBUS - The No. 7 Columbus State University women's team grabbed a statement victory on Saturday with a 4-3 win over No. 5 University of West Alabama at the Walden Tennis Center.
The Lady Cougars remain undefeated (3-0) while the Tigers fall to 1-1 on the spring season. It was also a milestone victory for head coach
Evan Isaacs on Saturday as the 21st-year head coach won his 400th career match with the Lady Cougars.
West Alabama was able to take the first point of the afternoon after taking two of the three doubles matches. The duo of
Agostina Bigotti and
Neila Trklja played at second doubles and recorded the only doubles win for CSU, beating Almudena Sanz and Ming Deewajee 7-5.
The Lady Cougars bounced back in singles play though. The back of the CSU lineup held strong withÂ
Yelena Labat (#4),
Luciana Galves (#5) and
Sara Ramirez Goncalves (#6) all picking up crucial victories. Ramirez Goncalves won the clinching point for CSU, rallying to take sixth singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. At second singles,, Trklja also grabbed a key win, going three sets with No. 22  Haina Franco before finally beat her 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
Playing in the one spot,
Valentina Abrile lost a close match to Sanz, 6-4, 6-3, while Ramirez lost a top-25 showdown against No. 24 Katia De La Garza.Â
