Box Score 2 Gulf Shores, Ala. - The Columbus State University softball team (1-3) went 1-1 on the final day of the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Cougars beat Mississippi College (2-2) 6-5, but fell to the University of West Alabama (2-2) 3-2 on the final game of the day.
"The first game was wild," said head coach
Brad Huskisson. "It was a pitching duel and then both offenses got it going. We made a couple defensive mistakes in the second game, with some hard situational plays, but we will get back to it this weekend."
Game 1: CSU 6, MC 5
The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the fifth to give CSU a huge 6-0 lead over the Choctaws.
With bases loaded,
Caitlyn Canady hit an RBI infield single to score
Lindsey Patton, who walked earlier in the inning. Just like yesterday,
Hannah Rose Corbin smashed her second grand slam of the season and put Columbus State ahead 5-0.
Morgan Elston continued the Cougar rally by singling to center field and later scored off of a
Kenzie Bayer RBI single to left field.
Mississippi College didn't give up as the Choctaw offense scored four runs in the next half inning, closing the Cougars' lead to only two.
In their last at bats, MC was only able to plate one more run, giving Columbus State the 6-5 victory.
Corbin (1-1) picked up her first win in the circle of the season, striking out eight players.
Game 2: UWA 3, CSU 2
The Cougars lost a close one in their final game in the Gulf Shores.
Columbus State entered the seventh holding a 2-1 lead over West Alabama. However, a tough defensive miscue allowed the Tigers to rally for the 3-2 win.
