Cougar Softball Sweeps Barry

CSU beat Barry 4-1 and 7-5 Wednesday night.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Columbus State University softball team swept Barry University Wednesday night, 4-1 and 7-2. The Cougars improve to 13-12 (4-2 PBC) while The Buccaneers fall to 16-10 (6-3 SSC).

GAME ONE: CSU 4, BU 1

The Cougars wasted no time in the first inning, scoring four runs off Barry's starting pitcher, Maci Barnhart, and never looked back.

Paige Vincent hit a single to right field and wasn't on base for long as Hannah Rose Corbin followed up with a two-run home run over the left field fence, quickly making it a 2-0 ballgame. Madeline Parker made it 4-0 after ripping a two-run RBI single to centerfield.

Barry put one run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a Becka Mellor RBI single up the middle.

Corbin (10-4) earned the win inside the circle after striking out 10 and allowing four hits and one run. Barnhart falls to 11-5 after receiving the loss.

Vincent went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and Kenzie Bayer was 2-for-4.

GAME 2: CSU 7, BU 5

The Buccaneers put up a fight as CSU and BU were back-and-forth with scoring in the nightcap.

Just like game one, Columbus State got on board in the first inning. Caitlyn Canady led off the inning with a single and then scored off a defensive throwing error by the Barry first baseman after Paige Vincent grounded out to the shortstop.

Morgan Elston extended the Cougars' lead to 2-0 thanks to a solo homer to left field.

In the third, Corbin ripped a double to right field and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Laura Harris drew a walk and stole second base, and with a throwing error by the Buccaneers' catcher, Corbin scored to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Kenzie Bayer made it 4-0 with an RBI groundout, plating Harris.

Barry minimized CSU's lead to three in the bottom of the third with a fielder's choice to Corbin inside the circle.

Katelyn Cooper ripped an RBI double to right field to plate Parker in the top of fourth, putting the Cougars ahead 5-1.

BU's Skylar Jenkins copied Cooper, smacking an RBI double into right center field to make it 5-2.

Columbus State added two more runs in the top of the sixth off a throwing error by the pitcher and a Vincent sacrifice bunt.

The Buccaneers tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Jenkins and Mac Stone-Falmer added two bases-loaded singles through the right side. Haylee Folds entered the circle in relief of starter Jessica Lopez, to finish the final two outs of the game. Berlin Colvin grabbed a pinch-hit RBI, getting out with a grounder to Vincent at first base, making it 7-5, but BU couldn't find a way past Folds.

Corbin was 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and one run scored, while Canady and Cooper each added two hits apiece.

Lopez earned the win and improves to 2-4 with Folds receiving her first save.
