Softball Splits with Georgia Southwestern

The Cougars beat GSW 5-3 in game one, then lost 6-4 in the nightcap.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Americus, Ga. - The Columbus State University softball team split a doubleheader with Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia Southwestern State University on Friday, April 15. The Cougars took game one 5-3, while GSW won 6-4 on a walk off ground rule double in the nightcap.

The Cougars are now 21-21 (10-7 PBC) and the Hurricanes are 27-17 (10-7 PBC).

GAME 1: CSU 5, GSW 3

After trailing 2-0 for two innings, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take the 3-2 lead. Madeline Parker ripped an RBI single up the middle to plate Caitlyn Canady who singled to lead off the inning. Morgan Elston then hit a hardball back to the pitcher, forcing an error and two more runs to score, giving CSU the lead.

GSW's Zoe Willis smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the third to tie the game at three.

CSU took the lead again in the fourth, thanks to a Hannah Rose Corbin RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Katelyn Cooper.

Canady delivered again in the sixth with an RBI double to right centerfield, easily scoring Laura Harris from third base.

Canady led the Cougars going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Corbin (14-8) earned the win inside the circle after striking out 12.

GAME 2: CSU 4, GSW 6

The Cougars hit the board in the top of the first thanks to a wild pitch from GSW's starter Regan Lee, allowing Caitlyn Canady to score from third base.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Hurricanes took the 2-1 lead thanks to two RBI sacrifice bunts.

Georgia Southwestern extended its lead in the fifth, thanks to a solo homer each from Willis and Katelyn Wood to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

The Cougars rallied to tie the game at four in the top of the seventh, thanks to a shortstop error and GSW's pitcher Whitfield walking in two runs. 

GSW loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with only one out, when Morgan Mullin ripped a walk off two-run RBI ground rule double to left field to take the 6-4 victory. 

Canady, Paige Vincent, Kenzie Bayer and Laura Harris each recorded one hit.

CSU and GSW will play for the series on Saturday, April 16 with the first pitch scheduled for noon in Americus, Ga.
