Softball Sweeps Georgia College on Senior Day

The Cougars swept the doubleheader against the Bobcats to earn the three-game PBC series sweep.

COLUMBUS - With two wins over the doubleheader, the Columbus State University softball team swept a three-game Peach Belt Conference series from Georgia College on Saturday at Cougar Field. The Cougars took game one 12-6 and beat the Bobcats 16-4 in a run-rule victory in the nightcap.

Game 1: CSU 12, GC 6
Columbus State took an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second with the help from Grace Kiser's two-run home run over the center field fence. Paige Vincent made it 3-0 with an RBI single to first base to plate Caitlyn Canady before Kenzie Bayer followed with a two-run RBI triple into right field.

Senior Morgan Elston jacked a solo homer to right center in the third inning, starting another Cougar rally. Kiser and Vincent then collected RBI singles to extend CSU's lead to 8-0 entering the top of the fourth.

The Bobcats fought back and scored five runs in the fifth to erase the run-rule victory that Columbus State could've had.

CSU got back on board and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to increase the Cougar lead. Vincent reached on a fielder's choice to first base and collected an RBI, then Canady crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Morgan Cooper made it 12-5 with a two-run RBI single to left field.

Kiser led the Cougars going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Canady, Vincent and Bayer each collected two hits.

CSU starting pitcher Jessica Lopez (5-6) earned the victory inside the circle after recording three strikeouts and not allowing any runs. Corbin recorded her second save of 2022.

Game 2: CSU 16, GC 4
CSU jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Bayer smacked an RBI double into left center field and Madeline Parker followed up with a two-run homer over the center field wall. Elston then ripped a double and scored thanks to a Laura Harris single up the middle.

Georgia College got two runs back in the top of the second thanks to a two-run homer from Carlie Behan.

The Cougars made it 10-2 in the bottom of the second as Katelyn Cooper smacked an RBI doubled to center field to start things off. Vincent then singled into the left field to collect an RBI, scoring Cooper, and Bayer picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep right field to plate Canady who tagged up on the play.

Back-to-back Bobcat homers in the fourth made it a 6-4 ballgame.

Columbus State went on a hitting streak in the fourth, scoring six runs off of seven hits. Elston and Harris started the inning with back-to-back solo home runs, making it 12-4. CSU carried a pinch hit hitting streak from four Cougars. Haylee Folds made it 13-4 after a pinch hit RBI single into center field. Christine Vaughn then ripped a three-run homer over the left field wall, making it 16-4. Sydney Singleton and M. Cooper also delivered singles for CSU.

Folds (4-5) received the win on the mound after striking out three.
