No. 9 Cougars Even Series With Flagler

Columbus State scored three runs in the ninth for the dramatic win.

St. Augustine, Fla. - Ninth inning heroics lifted the ninth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team to a 7-4 victory over Flagler on Saturday to even the series at one.

The win improves Columbus State's record to 37-9 and 19-6 in PBC play. Flagler drops to 24-25 and 16-10 in conference action.

The Cougars came out of the gates swinging in the top of the first when Steven Minter hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, followed by a single by Colby Brabston to put the Cougars up 2-0. Flagler tied the ballgame up in the bottom of the second with a fly-ball down the right field line that just snuck fair by the foul pole.

That would be all the scoring Flagler would do until later in the game due to another strong outing from sophomore Noah Windhorst. Windhorst pitch 6.1 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters.

After Flagler tied the game up 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Columbus State's offense came alive in the top of the ninth. The inning started with David Meadows and Robert Brooks getting plunked before a well-place sacrifice bunt down the third base line from Steven Minter. Colby Brabston stepped into the batters box with runners on second and third and one out, in a left-on-left matchup. Brabston roped a ball passed the first baseman and down the right field line scoring Brooks and Meadows. Derek Wylie put some icing on the cake with a double to left field the next at bat.

Peyton Burton came into the game in the bottom of the ninth, earning his third save of the year in what was a dominant, three strikeout inning.

The Cougars will wrap up the series and play their last regular season game tomorrow at 1pm at Drysdale Field before hosting the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament next weekend.
