COLUMBUS - The top-ranked and second-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team cruised into the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 4-0 win over seventh-ranked and third-seeded University of North Georgia in the semifinals on Saturday. The 2022 PBC Tennis Tournament is being hosted by CSU and the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.
The Cougars (17-2) will be playing for the program's fifth straight PBC Tournament title on Sunday against sixth-ranked and top-seeded Flagler College at 2 p.m. FC snapped CSU's 36-match PBC regular-season win streak with a 4-3 win in St. Augustine, Fla. on April 19.
North Georgia (14-6) made Columbus State work for the doubles point on Saturday. The Nighthawks were able to claim a win at first doubles when 34th-ranked Joaquin Benoit and Ryan Gaskin defeated sixth-ranked
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos 6-2. However, that is where the winning would stop for UNG on the afternoon as the Cougars reeled over wins.
At second doubles, 13th-ranked
Pietro Martinetti and
Tommaso Schold had no issues in a 6-1 ranked win over 30th-ranked Cole Brainard and Daniel Ostap.
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-3 decision over Guilio Sassi and Zach Waldow.Â
CSU made quick work of the Nighthawks in singles with top-ranked Regalado setting the tone. The PBC Player of the Year breezed over 10th-ranked Benoit 6-3, 6-1 for his eighth-ranked victory of the year. Martinetti dropped even fewer games than his teammate at sixth singles, taking down Sassi in quick order 6-2, 6-1.
The clincher came from 38th-ranked Schold in the third spot after a furious rally in the second set. The junior claimed the first set 6-2 but had to come from behind to take down Waldow 7-6 in the second to ink the straight-set win.
In the unfinished matches, Cueto Ramos was closing in on a win over Gaskin in the second spot, while Garay was tied in the third set against Ostap at fourth singles. Brainard was trying to put away Steen in straight sets, leading 6-3, 5-5 when play was called.
Columbus State and Flagler will match up at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Walden Tennis Center.
