GREENWOOD, S.C. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team showed no signs of rust in a 6-1 victory over 12th-ranked Lander University on Saturday in Peach Belt Conference play.
After taking the court on Saturday for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Cougars (13-1, 3-0 PBC) picked up their seventh straight victory to remain perfect in PBC action.
Columbus State set the tone for the day by taking all three doubles matches. The fourth-ranked doubles team of
Javier Cueto Ramos and
Alvaro Regalado had no problems in a 6-1 win over 44th-ranked Matthew De Groot and Markus Sorensen in the top spot. Ninth-ranked
Pietro Martinetti and
Tommaso Schold teamed back up on Saturday at second doubles to down Hugo Regner and Nick Beamish 6-3, while
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen were 6-4 winners of Tomas De Negri and Nicolas Chan in the third position.
Columbus State grabbed five more wins in singles play to wrap up the day. Four Cougars won in straight sets, including top-ranked Regalado, who continued his perfect spring with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at first singles against Bailey Horne. Garay had the most dominant performance at fourth singles as the Columbus native blanked Chan 6-0, 6-0. Fifth and sixth singles were decided by similar scores with Steen (6-4, 6-3) and Martinetti (6-4, 6-4) getting into the win column for the Cougars.Â
The matches in the second and third positions went into the decisive third set with CSU and LU (14-3) splitting the results. The Cougars collected another point when 37th-ranked Cueto Ramos rallied to defeat De Negri 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the second spot, but Lander spoiled the shutout with a win at third singles. Regner held off a comeback attempt by 25th-ranked Schold to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 for the Bearcats' lone point of the afternoon.
