Softball Splits With Young Harris

The Cougars took game one 9-6 and lost game two 3-1.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team split a doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference opponent Young Harris College on Saturday, April 9. The Cougars are now 19-18 (9-5 PBC) and the Mountain Lions are 17-16 (8-9 PBC).

GAME 1: CSU 9, YHC 6

The Cougars got off to a 3-0 start in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double to right field by Kenzie Bayer, an RBI single up the middle from Madeline Parker and a Morgan Elston RBI sacrifice fly-out to right field.

In the second, Hannah Rose Corbin hit an RBI single into right field to plate Lindsey Patton, giving Columbus State a 4-0 lead.

Young Harris added a run in the third thanks to a Shea Bayreuther RBI double to right field. Morgan Curley then cranked a two-run home run over the left center field fence to put the Mountain Lions within one run to the Cougars.

YHC took the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs including a two-run RBI double by Curley, making it a 6-4 ballgame.

In the bottom of the same inning, Corbin ripped a full-count three-run homer to left field to put CSU ahead of YHC 7-6.

Elston delivered again in the fifth with a two-run bomb over the center field fence, securing the 9-6 victory.

Corbin started the game in the circle and recorded six strikeouts. Haylee Folds relieved her in the fourth and received the win, making her 3-4. Folds struck out three and didn't allow any runs.

Patton went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Corbin went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. Parker also recorded two hits and Elston posted three RBIs.

GAME 2: YHC 3, CSU 1

The second game of the afternoon was a pitcher's dual between CSU's Jessica Lopez and YHC's Brookelyn Sweeny and Sam Davis. 

Both teams were scoreless through the fifth inning until the Mountain Lions were able to score with a Bayreuther RBI sacrifice fly-out to left field to score the speedy Kenzie Chappell.

The Cougars tied the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth thanks to a Caitlyn Canady RBI single to shortstop to score Parker from third.

The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the top of the seventh as Curley smacked her second two-run homer of the day to make it 3-1. 

Columbus State had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't find a way to plate any runs.

The Cougars stranded 11 runners while YHC left nine on base in the nightcap. Paige Vincent led CSU going 2-for-4 and Canady, Bayer, Elston and Patton each added one. 

Lopez struck out four in her seven inning performance, receiving the loss and dropping to 3-6 on the season.

The Cougars and Mountain Lions will play for the series win on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. back at Cougar Field.
