No. 6 Lady Cougars Advance to National Quarterfinals

It's the fifth straight season CSU has reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA DII Women's Tennis Championship.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - The No. 6 Columbus State University women's tennis team swept its way into the national quarterfinals with a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Cameron University in the NCAA DII Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday. The 2022 national championship is taking place at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Lady Cougars (20-5) revenged a February loss to the Aggies to reach the national quarterfinals for the fifth straight season. CSU will turn its attention to No. 12 University of Indianapolis, who recorded a 4-0 win in its round of 16 match over Wilmington University on Tuesday. The two teams will square off at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Columbus State didn't waste much time picking up the doubles point over Cameron, grabbing wins at first and second doubles. Nelia Trklja and Agostina Bigotti were impressive in the second position, downing Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska 6-1 to record the first win of the afternoon. CSU's top duo finished up right behind them as No. 12 Valentina Abrile and Mariana Ramirez defeated No. 10 Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska 6-2. Third doubles went unfinished, with Lea Manga and Kateryna Rudenko leading Sara Ramirez and Luciana Galves 5-4.

The Lady Cougars registered three straight-set victories to wrap up the win in the blistering heat. Gavles lost just one game in the fifth flight, racing to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wawrowska. In a ranked showdown at third singles, No. 61 Abrile upset No. 49 Lea Manga 6-3, 6-2 to pull CSU one win away from advancing.

Cameron (21-6) held off the final win for awhile until No. 52 Mariana Ramirez finished at second singles. Ramirez won a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 decision over No. 58 Uspenskaia to end the Aggie season.

CSU was down a set at fourth and sixth singles when play was called. No. 9 Trklja and No. 41 Polunova were battling in a third set at first singles.
