Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - The Columbus State University women's soccer team's season ends in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional, falling to No. 6 and first-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University after penalty kicks. The Cougars and Bears tied 2-2 after two overtime sessions, but the Bears advance to the next round after beating the Cougars in penalty kicks 4-2.
The match was scoreless up until the 84th minute when
Sage Smith scored off of
Emma Beddow's pass to put the Cougars up 1-0 on the Bears with just five minutes left to play. With one minute remaining, Elin Hansson headed the ball into the net to send the teams to overtime.Â
In the first overtime session, Nicole Auger put Lenoir-Rhyne ahead 2-1 but Beddow scored in the second overtime session to send both teams into penalty kicks.
Lenoir-Rhyne made the first three penalty kicks, missed the fourth and made the fifth, while the Cougars only made two, by Beddow and
Lauren Barnes.
Columbus State ends the 2023 season with a record of 15-4-2.
