COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 25, beating No. 20 Wilmington University 5-3 and falling to Wingate University 3-4. The Cougars are now 7-4.
Game 1 - CSU 5, WU 3
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning thanks to a Madeline Parker RBI double to left-center field, plating Caitlyn Canady. Parker ended up scoring after a double steal from Elyse Ambrose (stealing second) and Parker taking home.
The Wildcats minimized CSU's lead to one run with an RBI single through the left side of the field in the bottom of the third. In the fourth, WU took a 3-2 lead off of two throwing errors from CSU's defense.
CSU scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead over the Wildcats. It started with Parker who tied the game with a line-drive RBI single into left field, scoring Canady again. With the bases loaded, Laura Harris got hit by a pitch to walk in Parker from third. Freshman Nova Wright then ripped an RBI single that ricocheted off of the second baseman, allowing Ambrose to score.
The Cougars made it 7-3 in the seventh thanks to an Ambrose solo homer and a Miller RBI double down the left field, scoring Harris.
NOTES:
- Canady, Parker and Wright each posted two hits
- Canady and Wright each hit a triple
- Parker and Miller both hit a double
- Ambrose jacked a home run and robbed a home run with a diving catch over the left-field fence
- CSU tallied 10 hits
- Folds, Lopez and Corbin combined for seven strikeouts
Game 2 - CSU 3, WU 4
Wingate scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead over the Cougars. CSU responded with a run in the fourth with Kenzie Bayer double down the left field line to plate Miller, making it 2-1.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs extended its lead to 3-1 with a Savanna Brooks home run.
Bayer came up strong in the sixth again, ripping an RBI single to left center, scoring Kristen Odum and minimizing the Bulldogs' lead by one run. Wingate responded with another run in the bottom of the inning off of a CSU throwing error.
NOTES:
- Corbin, Miller and Bayer each tallied two hits
- Bayer recorded two RBIs
- Corbin received the loss inside the circle and is 3-3
- Bayer and Corbin each posted doubles
